Spring 2007 Program for Northeastern Section NExT
Friday, June 8, 2007
12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Keene State College
Keene, New Hampshire

The Northeastern Section is continuing a Section NExT program for new and relatively new colleagues on Friday, June 8 just prior to this year’s spring meeting. By providing talks and workshops on issues of interest, opportunities to meet and share ideas with other new colleagues, and an introduction into Section activities, we hope to assist new faculty in their transition from graduate school to professional academic life. We welcome all untenured full time faculty, both those who have and have not been National NExT fellows.

12:00 - 1:00 Lunch
1:00 - 2:00 Welcome to Our World: Mathematical Reasoning and Communication Beyond Calculus
Mike Cullinane, Keene State College.

Post-calculus mathematics is often quite different, in a variety of ways, from the mathematics students have previously encountered. Moreover, students’ perceptions of the content, purpose, and value of their mathematics experiences beyond calculus, especially those involving theoretical and abstract concepts, are often at odds with the learning objectives set by mathematics faculty. Part of this disparity can be attributed to the fairly abrupt shift from memorizing and mimicking to more sophisticated forms of reasoning and problem solving. Furthermore, during this transition students are also expected to engage with much more formal modes of representing and communicating mathematical ideas. This presentation will offer suggestions for helping students survive this “leap” into the world of higher mathematics, a world that though sometimes challenging and frustrating, is ultimately satisfying and rewarding.

3:00 Section Meeting begins
