Spring Program for Northeastern Section NExT
Friday, June 13, 2003
10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Massachusetts College of the Liberal Arts
North Adams, MA

The Northeastern Section is continuing a Section NExT program for new and relatively new colleagues at this year’s spring Section meeting. By providing talks and workshops on issues of interest, opportunities to meet and share ideas with other new colleagues, and an introduction into Section activities, we hope to assist new faculty in their transition from graduate school to professional academic life. We welcome all untenured full time faculty, both those who have and have not been National NExT fellows.

10:00-10:30 Registration of prospective Section NExT fellows and preliminary information
10:30-11:20 Contemporary Topics and Discrete Math; Observations, Connections, and Innovations
by Prof. Ann Kizanis of Western New England College
Prof. Kizanis will present ideas about motivating mathematical content typical in freshmen courses. Some of her discussion will include general material about teaching freshmen, which she presents annually to new WNEC faculty. She will also discuss how these topics are examined at an upper division level.
11:30-12:00 Preparation for Tenure Discussion
Prof. Solomon Friedberg, Boston College
Prof. Lisa Humphreys, Rhode Island College
Prof. Ockle Johnson, Keene State College
Prof. Ann Kizanis, Western New England College

12:00-1:15 Lunch
1:15-2:00 Making Waves
by Prof. Solomon Friedberg of Boston College
Prof Friedberg will deliver a Case Studies presentation related to the teaching of calculus. Case studies are a way of deepening ones understanding of content from a pedagogical perspective while also addressing pedagogical issues. This case is one of several from the materials created by the Boston College Mathematics Case Studies Project.
