Welcome to the NES/MAA!

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Our members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. We welcome all who are interested in the mathematical sciences.

The mission of the MAA is "to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level."

The Northeastern Section of the MAA includes the six New England States of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont and the four Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

Upcoming Events

  • Simmons College is hosting a Dinner Meeting on October 27 where Christopher Danforth from the University of Vermont will speak on "Chaos and the Mathematics of Prediction: Hurricane Katrina, Harry Potter, and Happiness". This is a great opportunity to learn some very interesting mathematics and to socialize with other members of the Section. Visit the Dinner Meetings page for details.

  • The Fall 2008 Section Meeting will be held at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts on November 21 and 22. This looks like another great meeting. We hope to see you there!

David Carhart wins the 2008 NES Teaching Award

The Section is delighted to announce that David Carhart of Bentley College is the winner of the 2008 Northeastern Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching. His students and colleagues give him the highest of compliments on his energy and innovation:

“His innate positive energy and curiosity was infectious among the students for which the entire class benefited. Dave has the special ability to relate to students in a one-on-one situation, he built relationships with students based in respect and dignity for others. He became a mentor to many, I am proud to say that I am one.”

“Dave usually arrives at work shortly after six in the morning, often six days a week, and can be found in the department office of Xerox room finalizing [brand new] handouts for his classes. In fact, Dave prepares handouts for almost every meeting of every course.”

“David’s work encourages me to be a better teacher… His expectations for his colleagues are similarly high and we are, as a department, grateful for the resulting push to do better!”

A full description of some of Professor Carhart's accomplishments and impact are in the Section's Spring Newsletter. Congratulations Professor Carhart!

Spring Meeting at Saint Michael's College, May 30 and 31, 2008

We had a fantastic Spring 2008 Section Meeting at Saint Michael's this spring. A great dealt of thanks goes to the Program Committee and Local Arrangements Committee who put together a very interesting program and were wonderful hosts.
