Welcome to the NES/MAA!

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Our members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. We welcome all who are interested in the mathematical sciences.

The mission of the MAA is "to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level."

The Northeastern Section of the MAA includes the six New England States of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont and the four Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

Upcoming Events

  • The Spring 2008 Section Meeting will be held at Saint Michael's in Colchester, Vermont, on May 30 and 31. The organizers have put together a very interesting program, and the information is available at the meeting webpage.

  • There are three Dinner Meetings scheduled this spring, one at Norwich University, one at the College of the Holy Cross, and one at Framingham State College. Visit the Dinner Meetings page for details.

  • There are three interrelated Quantitative Literacy events this May. The participants are invited to all of the three or to individual events. All will take place during the May 15-17, 2008 at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, NH. Travel support is available for the workshop event for individuals lacking institutional or grant support. David Carhart wins the NES Teaching Award

The Section is delighted to announce that David Carhart of Bentley College is the winner of the 2008 Northeastern Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching. His students and colleagues give him the highest of compliments on his energy and innovation:

“His innate positive energy and curiosity was infectious among the students for which the entire class benefited. Dave has the special ability to relate to students in a one-on-one situation, he built relationships with students based in respect and dignity for others. He became a mentor to many, I am proud to say that I am one.”

“Dave usually arrives at work shortly after six in the morning, often six days a week, and can be found in the department office of Xerox room finalizing [brand new] handouts for his classes. In fact, Dave prepares handouts for almost every meeting of every course.”

“David’s work encourages me to be a better teacher… His expectations for his colleagues are similarly high and we are, as a department, grateful for the resulting push to do better!”

A full description of some of Professor Carhart's accomplishments and impact will be contained in the Section's Spring Newsletter. Congratulations Professor Carhart!

Fall Meeting at Framingham State College, November 16 and 17, 2007

We had a wonderful Fall Meeting at Framingham State. A great deal of thanks goes to Sarah Mabrouk, who organized both the Local Arrangements and the Program.

Math at Work: Careers in the Mathematical Sciences Student Conference
October 27, 2007 at Bentley College

Bentley College and the Northeastern Section sponsored this conference which provided an opportunity for students to hear from professionals about the various areas relating to mathematics where employment opportunities exist. This was truly an extraordinary experience for all who attended, and Karen Schroeder at Bentley, and the entire organizing committee, deserve a tremendous amount of credit for coordinating this. More details are at the conference website.

Kenneth Gross wins the Haimo Teaching Award

Kenneth Gross of the University of Vermont is one of three recipients of the Haimo Teaching Award this year, the highest honor for teaching awarded by the MAA. Professor Gross is one of many winners of the Northeastern Section's Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching who have gone on to win the Haimo Award, including Gilbert Strang of M.I.T. last year.

Congratulations, Professor Gross!
