Welcome to the NES/MAA!

The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) is the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Our members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. We welcome all who are interested in the mathematical sciences.

The mission of the MAA is "to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level."

The Northeastern Section of the MAA includes the six New England States of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont and the four Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

Solomon Friedberg wins the 2009 NES Teaching Award

The Section is delighted to announce that Solomon Friedberg of Boston College is the winner of the 2009 Northeastern Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching. His students and colleagues praise him not only for his enthusiasm and skill in the classroom, but also for his commitment to his students and accessibility outside the classroom. In addition, he has organized a nationwide effort to improve the teaching of the next generation of college and university faculty by creating innovative materials to promote effective teaching among current graduate students.

A full description of some of Professor Friedberg's accomplishments and impact will be in the Section's Spring Newsletter. Congratulations Professor Friedberg!

Fr. Stanley Bezuszka passes away

The Rev. Stanley Bezuszka, who was one of the original founders of the Northeastern Section, passed away in December at the age of 94. Fr. Bezuszka was a member of the faculty at Boston College for more than 60 years and served as the first Vice-Chair of the Section in 1955-1956 and as the second Chair in 1956-1957.

There is a very nice remembrance of Fr. Bezuszka at the Boston College Chronicle, and more information about his contributions to the Section on the Section History page.

Congratulations to New Section Officers

The Section held elections at the Fall Meeting for several new Section Officers. Rob Poodiack from Norwich University was elected as the Vice-Chair of the Section, Phil Mahler from Middlesex Community College was elected as the Two-Year College Representative, and Ann Kizanis was re-elected as Secretary-Treasurer.

Congratulations Ann, Phil, and Rob, and a warm Thanks to Lois Martin who completed her term as Two-Year College Representative.
